FIRE · SMOKE · TOXICITY
Railway interior materials need to perform in demanding environments — and they need to meet the right fire-safety requirements for their application.
LANTAL's laboratory in Langenthal, Switzerland supports rolling-stock manufacturers, railway operators, seat manufacturers, interior suppliers and material producers with fire, smoke and toxicity testing for railway applications.
If the exact test route is not yet clear, start with the part, its construction and where it will be installed. Our team can help define the appropriate testing approach.
WHAT WE TEST
The applicable method depends on the component, installation and project requirements. The standards below are therefore a capability overview, not a substitute for defining the correct test route.
COMPLETE-SEAT TESTING
A railway passenger seat is more than its upholstery. Fabric, foam, interliners, adhesives, structure and the complete configuration can influence fire behaviour.
Where complete-seat testing is required, testing an individual material alone does not replace evaluation of the defined seat configuration. EN 16989 provides the relevant test route for complete passenger seats.

EN 45545-2 defines reaction-to-fire requirements for materials and products used in railway vehicles. The applicable requirement depends on the component, its use and the project-specific hazard level.
02
There is no single test for every railway material. The correct route depends on the component, where it is installed, the relevant requirement set and the project specification.
03
Yes. LANTAL supports complete-seat testing according to EN 16989, including the standardized vandalism procedure where applicable.
04
Smoke can be evaluated according to ISO 5659-2. Toxicity assessment for railway applications can be performed according to EN 17084, depending on the applicable requirement and test configuration.
